The brief

CAN is not a logic signal you can wire straight to a microcontroller pin. It needs a transceiver per bus, termination, and a supply the bus side can live on — and a design that fits the footprint of the Teensy it is built to carry.

Two buses rather than one is the specific ask: dual transceivers, flexible termination options, and enough size discipline that the whole assembly stays small enough to sit on the Teensy without overhang.

What we did

A compact carrier board that adds two CAN bus interfaces to a Teensy 4.0. It is sized to match the Teensy’s footprint, so the Teensy plugs in on header pins and the assembly stays small. It suits automotive, robotics and industrial CAN projects that need fast, reliable communication.

  • Dual CAN transceivers: Two SN65HVD230 3.3 V CAN transceivers connect to the Teensy’s two CAN controllers. Each has a 10 kΩ slope-control resistor and a 120 Ω termination resistor.
  • Flexible bus connections: CAN1 comes out on a 4-pin header with CANH, CANL, VIN and ground, and CAN2 comes out on separate single-pin headers, so each bus can be wired independently.
  • Onboard 5 V regulation: An MS1117-5.0 regulator makes a stable 5 V rail from the input voltage to power the Teensy and the status LED.
  • Status RGB LED: A single RGB LED driven directly from Teensy GPIO pins, for status or debug indication.
  • Compact two-layer design: The finished board is 38.9 mm x 19.3 mm on two layers, with all Teensy pins broken out through headers along both long edges. It is panelized with V-cuts for low-cost fabrication.
  • Manufacturing ready: We prepared Gerbers for JLCPCB production.
